If you’ve been told your iron is “a little low” and to just eat more spinach, but you still can’t get through a workday without wanting to lie down — you’re not imagining it. Iron deficiency is one of the most under-treated conditions in Alberta, and oral supplements don’t work for everyone.
At CareMed Wellness Clinic, our RN-led infusion team in Edmonton and Camrose delivers IV iron therapy that gets you back to functioning — not in six months of pill-popping, but often within days.
Signs Your Fatigue Might Be Iron Deficiency
- Persistent exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix
- Shortness of breath climbing stairs or during light exercise
- Brain fog, poor concentration, or memory lapses
- Pale skin, brittle nails, or hair thinning
- Restless legs at night
- Cravings for ice, dirt, or starch (a classic but overlooked sign called pica)
Many of our clients — especially women with heavy periods, postpartum moms, athletes, and anyone with a plant-based diet — carry undiagnosed iron deficiency anemia for years before someone finally orders the right bloodwork.
Why IV Iron Beats Oral Supplements for Many People
Oral iron pills are absorbed slowly, often cause nausea and constipation, and can take three to six months to meaningfully raise ferritin levels. For people with:
- Absorption issues (IBD, celiac disease, past bariatric surgery)
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Pregnancy-related anemia
- Intolerance to oral iron
- Needing fast correction before a surgery or major life event
…an IV iron infusion delivers iron directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the gut entirely. Most clients notice improved energy and mental clarity within one to two weeks.
Our Iron Deficiency Program: From Bloodwork to Prescription
Most Edmonton IV clinics can administer an infusion — but only if you already have a diagnosis and a prescription in hand. CareMed closes that gap. Cheryl Brookman, our Nurse Practitioner, can order the bloodwork that confirms iron deficiency, diagnose the underlying cause, and prescribe treatment directly — all before you ever need to see a separate physician.
What to Expect at CareMed
- 1. Bloodwork & Diagnosis — Cheryl orders and reviews your labs (ferritin, hemoglobin, transferrin saturation) to confirm iron deficiency and investigate what’s causing it — heavy periods, absorption issues, diet, or another underlying factor.
- 2. Prescription & Consultation — If an iron infusion is appropriate, Cheryl prescribes it directly and our clinical team walks through any risks or contraindications. If oral iron or another treatment is more appropriate, she’ll prescribe that instead.
- 3. The Infusion — Administered by our RN infusion team in a comfortable, private treatment space. Most sessions take 30–60 minutes.
- 4. Monitoring & Follow-Up — You’re monitored throughout, and Cheryl tracks your progress with follow-up labs, adjusting your plan as needed.
Is IV Iron Covered or Direct-Billed?
Iron infusions are a medical/nursing service and are billed privately (they fall outside AHS’s CDHCI home care direct-billing program, which applies to personal care and homemaking only). Many extended health benefit plans offer partial reimbursement — we can provide receipts for your insurer.
Two Convenient Locations
CareMed Wellness Clinic offers IV iron infusions at both our Edmonton (Covenant Health Centre) and Camrose locations, so you don’t have to drive across the city — or the region — to get evidence-based care.
